Allogeneic adipose tissue-derived stem cells (hASCs) are an investigational mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy being developed by the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Toulouse for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. These cells are harvested from the adipose tissue of healthy donors and administered via intravenous infusion. The therapeutic strategy relies on the cells' innate ability to home to damaged neural tissues and exert neuroprotective effects through paracrine signaling. Key mechanisms include the secretion of neurotrophic factors such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF), which support neuronal survival and synaptic plasticity. Additionally, hASCs possess immunomodulatory properties that can shift the microglial phenotype from a pro-inflammatory to an anti-inflammatory state, potentially reducing neuroinflammation and facilitating the clearance of amyloid-beta plaques.
