This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) harvested from healthy donors. Developed by researchers at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (formerly National Yang-Ming University) in Taiwan, the therapy is being evaluated for the treatment of neurodegenerative cerebellar disorders, specifically spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) and the cerebellar type of multiple system atrophy (MSA-C). Administered intravenously, these stem cells are hypothesized to exert neuroprotective effects by migrating to damaged tissues and secreting trophic factors that support cerebellar Purkinje cells and modulate the inflammatory environment associated with neurodegeneration. Results from a Phase I/IIa open-label study involving six patients with SCA3 and one with MSA-C indicated that the infusion was well-tolerated and potentially stabilized or retarded disease progression compared to the natural history of the diseases.
