Allogeneic adult human mesenchymal stem cells ex vivo expanded is an investigational cell therapy developed by the Fundación de Investigación Biomédica de Salamanca (FIBIS) for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. These cells are typically harvested from the bone marrow of healthy adult donors and expanded in vitro under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions to reach therapeutic doses. The therapeutic effect is primarily mediated through the 'secretome'—a complex mixture of cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors—which exerts potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects within the intra-articular environment. By inhibiting the activity of pro-inflammatory T-cells and promoting the polarization of M2 macrophages, the therapy aims to reduce synovial inflammation, alleviate pain, and potentially support the maintenance of cartilage integrity in patients with degenerative joint disease.
