Overview

Allogeneic amniotic epithelial cells (hAECs) are a cell-based therapy derived from the amniotic membrane of the human placenta. These cells possess stem cell-like properties, including the capacity for multi-lineage differentiation and the secretion of potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory factors. Developed by Monash Health in collaboration with the Hudson Institute of Medical Research and Monash University, this investigational biologic is being evaluated for its ability to mitigate the 'cytokine storm' and promote lung tissue repair in patients with severe COVID-19. The therapy aims to reduce systemic inflammation, stabilize coagulation mechanisms, and prevent multi-organ complications associated with COVID-19-related respiratory failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
