Allogeneic and expanded adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (AT-MSCs) are a cell-based advanced therapy medicinal product (ATMP) consisting of living mesenchymal stromal cells harvested from donor adipose tissue and expanded ex vivo. Developed by the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de la Fundación Jiménez Díaz, this therapy is administered intravenously to leverage the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties of MSCs. The primary goal is to mitigate the "cytokine storm" and promote lung tissue repair in critically ill patients with COVID-19-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Clinical development reached Phase 2 (BALMYS-19 trial) but was suspended due to financial constraints.
