Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Allogeneic BK virus-specific T cells (BKV-CTL or BK-VST) are an investigational, unapproved adoptive cell therapy consisting of third-party (donor-derived), ex vivo-expanded, cryopreserved, partially HLA-matched, 'off-the-shelf' T cells that target BK virus-infected cells. Because BK virus and JC virus share high sequence homology in immunogenic proteins, these T cells also cross-reactively target JC virus-infected cells. This therapy is primarily investigated for the treatment of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a life-threatening brain infection caused by the JC virus, as well as BK virus-associated hemorrhagic cystitis and BK virus nephropathy (BKVNP) in transplant recipients. Clinical studies have shown that these cells can cross the blood-brain barrier, reduce viral loads, and improve clinical symptoms in patients with PML.
