This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) developed by researchers at Nanjing Medical University and the Affiliated Drum Tower Hospital. It is primarily intended for the treatment of refractory systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus nephritis. The therapy works through potent immunomodulatory mechanisms, including the suppression of T-lymphocyte and B-lymphocyte activation and the modulation of dendritic cell function. Additionally, these MSCs exhibit the ability to home to damaged renal tissues, where they promote repair and reduce inflammation. Clinical studies have demonstrated that intravenous administration of these cells can significantly reduce disease activity scores (SLEDAI) and improve renal function in patients who have failed conventional immunosuppressive therapies. The treatment protocol typically involves a pre-treatment dose of cyclophosphamide followed by the intravenous infusion of the MSCs.
