Overview

Allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (allo-hMSCs) are an investigational cell therapy being developed by Dr. Mya Schiess and colleagues at UTHealth Houston for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The therapy consists of mesenchymal stem cells harvested from the bone marrow of healthy donors, which are then expanded and administered to patients via intravenous infusion. The primary mechanism of action involves immunomodulation to address neuroinflammation, a critical factor in the pathogenesis and progression of Parkinson's disease. By secreting various anti-inflammatory factors and interacting with the host's immune cells, the allo-hMSCs aim to restore homeostasis to the neuronal-glial microenvironment and potentially slow neurodegeneration. The program has completed Phase 1 safety testing and has moved into Phase 2 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials.
