This is an investigational cell-free biologic therapy consisting of the secretome (a collection of secreted factors) derived from allogeneic human bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). Developed by the University of Illinois at Chicago, it is formulated as topical eye drops for treating persistent corneal epithelial defects (PCED) and other non-resolving corneal epithelial diseases. The secretome contains a variety of cytokines, growth factors, and extracellular vesicles (exosomes) that mediate wound healing by promoting the migration and proliferation of corneal epithelial cells while exerting immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects on the ocular surface. This approach aims to provide the regenerative benefits of MSC therapy without the risks and logistical challenges associated with live cell transplantation.
