This investigational cell therapy, developed by the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), utilizes allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) for the treatment of chronic pancreatitis and its associated chronic pain. The therapy is currently being evaluated in the STEMCAP-1 Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT06205342). These MSCs are administered via intravenous infusion and are designed to leverage their innate immunomodulatory and regenerative properties to decrease pancreatic inflammation and alleviate persistent pain. The research program is spearheaded by Dr. Hongjun Wang within MUSC's Department of Surgery, focusing on the potential of these cells to modulate the immune response and promote tissue repair in the pancreas.
