This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic bone marrow-derived multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) developed by The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston). It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial as an adjunctive treatment for patients with treatment-resistant bipolar depression who exhibit elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of systemic inflammation. The therapy is hypothesized to exert its antidepressant effects by reducing neuro-inflammation and promoting neurogenesis. The cells are harvested from healthy adult donors and manufactured at the Judith R. Hoffberger Cellular Therapeutics Laboratory at UTHealth Houston, an FDA-registered facility.
