Overview

Allogeneic cord blood refers to the use of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells collected from the umbilical cord and placenta of a newborn donor for transplantation into a genetically different recipient. These cells are rich in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) capable of reconstituting bone marrow and immune function after myeloablative therapy. Allogeneic cord blood is primarily used as an alternative graft source for allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT), especially when matched related or unrelated adult donors are unavailable. Cord blood transplants require less stringent HLA matching than adult donor sources due to the immunological immaturity of neonatal cells, resulting in lower rates of graft-versus-host disease but higher risk of engraftment failure due to lower cell dose. In addition to treating malignant and non-malignant hematologic diseases, research is ongoing into its use for regenerative medicine applications such as neurodegenerative disorders, diabetes complications, cerebral palsy, stroke, congenital heart conditions, autoimmune diseases, and more[1][3][4][6][7][9].
