Overview

Allogeneic cord blood platelet-rich plasma (CB-PRP) is an investigational biologic therapy developed by The Second Hospital of Shandong University for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. It is produced by concentrating platelets from donor umbilical cord blood, which contains a higher density of regenerative growth factors and cytokines compared to adult peripheral blood. Upon intra-articular injection, the platelets release factors such as transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) from their alpha-granules. These components promote chondrocyte proliferation, stimulate the synthesis of extracellular matrix components like type II collagen and proteoglycans, and exert anti-inflammatory effects by modulating the cytokine environment within the joint. This approach aims to provide a standardized, off-the-shelf alternative to autologous PRP, potentially offering superior regenerative potential for patients with degenerative joint disease.
