Allogeneic cultured chondrocytes refer to a cell therapy product consisting of chondrocytes harvested from a donor, expanded in vitro, and prepared for transplantation. Developed by Interstem Co., Ltd., this "off-the-shelf" kit is designed to treat focal cartilage defects in patients with knee osteoarthritis. The therapeutic approach involves the surgical implantation of the cultured cells into the site of injury, where they are intended to proliferate and synthesize a new hyaline-like cartilage matrix. This method aims to overcome the limitations of autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI), such as the need for a preliminary biopsy and the associated donor-site morbidity, by providing a standardized, readily available cell source for joint repair.
