Allogeneic cultured islet cells were a **Novocell** donor-derived pancreatic-islet replacement product for type 1 diabetes. The product consisted of human islet cells isolated from deceased-donor pancreases and individually coated in polyethylene glycol for subcutaneous implantation. The transplanted cells were intended to sense circulating glucose and physiologically secrete human insulin, thereby improving glycemic control while the encapsulating polymer was intended to reduce exposure to host immune cells and avoid chronic systemic immunosuppression. The Phase 1/2 clinical study of this PEG-encapsulated islet-allograft product was terminated, and Novocell subsequently discontinued work on PEG-encapsulated islets after becoming ViaCyte.
