Allogeneic cytomegalovirus-specific memory T cells are an adoptive cellular immunotherapy developed by the Instituto de Investigación Marqués de Valdecilla (IDIVAL) for the treatment and prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in immunocompromised patients, particularly those undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). These cells are typically isolated from healthy, CMV-seropositive donors and selected or expanded to target specific CMV antigens, most commonly the 65 kDa lower matrix phosphoprotein (pp65) and Immediate-early protein 1 (IE-1). Once infused into the patient, these memory T cells provide immediate cellular immunity against the virus, bypassing the patient's own compromised immune system to control viral replication and reduce the incidence of CMV-related disease and associated mortality.
