Overview

The allogeneic dendritic cell-autologous tumor cell fusion vaccine is an investigational cancer immunotherapy developed by researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This biologic vaccine is created by fusing healthy donor-derived (allogeneic) dendritic cells with a patient's own (autologous) tumor cells using electrical pulses, a process known as electrofusion. The resulting hybrid cells combine the potent antigen-presenting and costimulatory capabilities of dendritic cells with the broad array of tumor-associated antigens found in the patient's cancer. This approach is designed to activate the patient's immune system, specifically inducing a tumor-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte response to target and eliminate metastatic renal cell carcinoma cells.
