Allogeneic dental follicle stem cells (DFSCs) are a type of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) derived from the dental follicle, the ectomesenchymal tissue surrounding the developing tooth germ. These cells are characterized by their high proliferative capacity, low immunogenicity, and multipotent differentiation potential, particularly into osteoblasts, odontoblasts, and cementoblasts. In a clinical context, they are primarily investigated for the regeneration of periodontal tissues, including the periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and cementum, in patients with severe periodontitis. As an allogeneic therapy, they are harvested from healthy donors (often from impacted third molars) and administered to recipients, leveraging their immunomodulatory properties to promote tissue repair without the need for autologous harvesting. Their therapeutic effect is mediated through both direct differentiation and the secretion of paracrine factors that modulate the local immune environment and stimulate endogenous repair.
