Overview

Topical allogeneic donor plasma is an investigational biologic therapy being evaluated by the University of Saskatchewan for the treatment of ligneous conjunctivitis, a rare manifestation of congenital plasminogen deficiency. Ligneous conjunctivitis is characterized by the formation of fibrin-rich, wood-like pseudomembranes on the conjunctiva and other mucosal surfaces. Because patients with this condition lack functional plasminogen, they cannot effectively degrade fibrin. This therapy involves the topical application of aliquoted fresh-frozen plasma (obtained from Canadian Blood Services) to the affected eye. The plasma serves as a source of exogenous plasminogen, which restores local fibrinolytic activity, promotes the dissolution of existing membranes, and prevents recurrence.
