Allogeneic ex-vivo expanded bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by Odense University Hospital for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. These cells are harvested from healthy donors, expanded in vitro to reach therapeutic quantities, and then administered via intra-articular injection. The therapy functions primarily through paracrine signaling, where the cells secrete a variety of anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors (the secretome) that modulate the local immune environment and inhibit synovial inflammation. This approach aims to provide a standardized, 'off-the-shelf' therapeutic option that overcomes the donor-age and potency limitations often associated with autologous stem cell treatments.
