Overview

Allogeneic expanded fetal mesenchymal stem cells are an investigational cell therapy product developed by Karolinska Institutet for the treatment of severe forms of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). These cells are derived from fetal liver tissue and expanded in vitro to create a therapeutic population of mesenchymal stem cells. The therapy is designed to be administered either prenatally (in utero) or postnatally. Once transplanted, these healthy donor cells are intended to engraft into the patient's bone, differentiate into osteoblasts, and produce functional type I collagen. This process aims to supplement or replace the defective collagen produced by the patient's own cells, thereby improving bone mineral density, increasing bone strength, and reducing the frequency of fractures. The development of this therapy is a central component of the international BOOSTB4 (Boost Brittle Bones Before Birth) consortium.
