Overview

Allogeneic fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) is a microbial therapy involving the transfer of a complete gut microbiome from healthy, lean donors to patients with metabolic disorders. Developed by the Lawson Health Research Institute in partnership with the London Health Sciences Centre and Western University, the therapy is specifically being evaluated for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic syndrome. The mechanism of action involves the restoration of a healthy microbial ecosystem in the recipient's gut, which is intended to reduce intestinal permeability (leaky gut) and subsequent systemic inflammation. In clinical study protocols, the processed fecal material is administered to the distal duodenum via endoscopy. Although a pilot trial demonstrated a significant reduction in small intestinal permeability in certain patients, it did not meet primary endpoints for insulin resistance or liver fat reduction.
