Overview

Allogeneic hepatocyte refers to liver cells (hepatocytes) isolated from a donor of the same species but with a different genetic background, intended for transplantation into another individual. These cells are used as an alternative to whole organ liver transplantation, particularly in cases of acute or chronic liver failure and certain inherited metabolic disorders. The primary mechanism involves engraftment and functional replacement of damaged or deficient host hepatocytes, thereby restoring essential liver functions such as albumin synthesis and detoxification. Allogeneic hepatocyte transplantation faces challenges related to immune rejection; encapsulation technologies (e.g., hydrogel-based microcapsules) are being developed to protect transplanted cells from immune attack while maintaining their viability and function[1][6]. This approach is under investigation for use in bioartificial liver devices and direct cell therapy.
