Overview

Allogeneic hepatocyte-derived liver progenitor-like cells (HepLPCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by RenJi Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, in collaboration with Shanghai Celliver Biotechnology. These cells are generated from human primary hepatocytes through a defined conversion protocol. HepLPCs are designed to treat liver cirrhosis by secreting high levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). They operate via paracrine mechanisms to induce apoptosis in hepatic stellate cells through STAT1-mediated pathways, effectively reducing liver fibrosis and promoting tissue repair. The therapy is currently being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials for safety and tolerability in patients with liver cirrhosis.
