Allogeneic human cardiospheres are a cardiac cell-based biologic therapy consisting of three-dimensional, self-assembling cardiac-derived cell clusters obtained from donor heart tissue. Developed by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in collaboration with Capricor, this therapy is designed to treat chronic ischemic cardiomyopathy. Unlike direct cell engraftment, the therapy primarily functions through paracrine mechanisms, releasing factors that stimulate angiogenesis, recruit endogenous stem cells, and reduce inflammation and fibrosis. In clinical studies like the RECONSTRUCT trial, these cardiospheres are delivered via NOGA-guided transendocardial injection directly into the peri-infarct regions of the heart muscle to promote myocardial regeneration and reduce scar size.
