Allogeneic human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) are an investigational cell therapy being evaluated for the treatment of non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. Developed under the leadership of Dr. Marilyn Glassberg at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, these cells are derived from the bone marrow of healthy donors. The therapy is administered via intravenous infusion and leverages the innate immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and potential regenerative properties of mesenchymal stem cells to address the chronic airway inflammation and tissue damage characteristic of bronchiectasis. By secreting paracrine factors and interacting with immune cells, hMSCs aim to dampen the inflammatory response and promote a pro-regenerative environment in the lungs. The therapy is currently being studied in the Phase 1 CELEB trial to establish its safety and tolerability in patients receiving standard of care.
