Allogeneic human pancreatic islet cells are a cell therapy product consisting of clusters of endocrine cells, known as islets of Langerhans, isolated from the pancreas of a deceased human donor. These islets contain multiple cell types, most notably insulin-producing beta cells, as well as alpha, delta, and PP cells, which collectively regulate blood glucose levels. In the context of diabetes mellitus, these cells are transplanted into a recipient to restore endogenous insulin secretion and physiological glycemic control. While the standard clinical route of administration is via the hepatic portal vein, investigational protocols by **West China Hospital of Sichuan University** are evaluating the transplantation of these islets into the anterior chamber of the eye. The eye is considered an immune-privileged site, potentially offering a niche that protects the allogeneic graft from immune rejection and allows for non-invasive monitoring of islet survival and function.
