Overview

Allogeneic human umbilical cord blood is a cellular therapy product consisting of blood collected from the umbilical cord and placenta immediately after birth from unrelated donors. It contains hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells as well as non-hematopoietic stem cells capable of differentiating into diverse tissues. Its primary mechanism is reconstituting hematopoiesis in recipients following myeloablative or immunosuppressive conditioning, making it an alternative donor graft for allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. Compared with bone marrow, umbilical cord blood offers advantages including lower graft-versus-host disease risk and greater tolerance for HLA mismatch, but lower stem cell yield per unit. It is also increasingly investigated for regenerative medicine and immune modulation in non-hematopoietic diseases such as stroke, neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic diseases, congenital heart disease, and recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa. Applications include intravenous infusion for transplantation or regenerative therapies, sometimes utilizing mesenchymal stem cell populations derived from cord blood[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][9].
