Overview

Allogeneic human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) are a population of multipotent stromal cells isolated from the Wharton's jelly of the human umbilical cord. These cells are characterized by their ability to differentiate into various cell lineages (osteoblasts, chondrocytes, adipocytes) and their potent immunomodulatory and regenerative properties. hUC-MSCs function primarily through paracrine mechanisms, secreting a diverse array of cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors—such as VEGF, HGF, and TGF-β—that promote angiogenesis, inhibit apoptosis, and suppress inflammatory immune responses. Due to their low immunogenicity (low MHC class I and lack of MHC class II expression), they are suitable for allogeneic transplantation without the need for intensive immunosuppression. They are being extensively investigated for treating autoimmune disorders, inflammatory conditions, and tissue injuries, often in combination with biomimetic scaffolds to enhance engraftment and local therapeutic effects.
