Overview

Allogeneic human umbilical cord tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by Novo Cellular Medicine Institute LLP for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). These cells are harvested from the Wharton's jelly of umbilical cord tissue and are characterized by their potent immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and potentially neuroprotective properties. In RRMS, UC-MSCs are hypothesized to suppress the aberrant autoimmune response by modulating the activity of T-cells and B-cells and secreting paracrine factors that promote an environment conducive to neural repair and remyelination. This specific therapeutic product was evaluated in a Phase I/II clinical trial (NCT01531062) in combination with "liberation therapy," a percutaneous transluminal angioplasty procedure intended to treat chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI).
