Overview

Allogeneic IL-15–activated natural killer cells (IL15-NK) is an investigational adoptive cellular immunotherapy consisting of donor-derived natural killer (NK) cells that have been stimulated ex vivo with interleukin-15 (IL-15). This activation process is designed to enhance the cells' proliferation, survival, and cytotoxic activity against malignant cells. The therapy is primarily being evaluated in the context of haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (haplo-HSCT) for high-risk pediatric patients with hematological malignancies, such as acute leukemia. By leveraging the natural graft-versus-leukemia (GvL) effect, these activated NK cells aim to eliminate residual leukemic cells and prevent relapse, particularly in cases where donor-recipient NK cell alloreactivity (KIR mismatch) is absent. The development is led by the Fundación de Investigación Biomédica del Hospital Universitario La Paz (FIBHULP) in collaboration with the Spanish Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Group (GETH).
