Overview

Allogeneic induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cartilage is an investigational cell therapy developed by researchers at Kyoto University's Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) and Kyoto University Hospital. The therapy involves the differentiation of allogeneic induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into chondrocytes, which are then cultured to form three-dimensional cartilage-like tissue grafts. This engineered tissue is surgically implanted into the knee joint to treat articular cartilage damage. By utilizing a stock of iPSCs from healthy donors with specific HLA types to minimize immune rejection, this approach aims to provide a standardized, off-the-shelf treatment for joint repair, potentially overcoming the limitations of autologous chondrocyte implantation which requires multiple surgeries and long preparation times.
