Overview

Allogeneic islet refers to the transplantation of pancreatic islets isolated from a deceased human donor into a recipient, typically with type 1 diabetes. The goal of this procedure is to restore endogenous insulin production and improve glycemic control, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for exogenous insulin injections. Islets are isolated using enzymatic digestion (commonly collagenase) and then infused into the portal vein of the recipient’s liver, where they engraft and begin producing insulin. Recipients require lifelong immunosuppression to prevent rejection of the transplanted cells. Allogeneic islet transplantation offers an alternative to whole-organ pancreas transplant for selected patients with severe metabolic complications who have not achieved adequate control with standard therapies[2][3][4][5][7][10]. The mechanism involves direct replacement of lost beta-cell function by providing new insulin-producing cells.
