Islet cell transplant is an investigational cellular therapy consisting of allogeneic donor-derived pancreatic islet cells, primarily insulin-producing beta cells, which are transplanted into the patient's liver via the portal vein. This biologic therapy is intended to restore endogenous insulin secretion and improve glycemic control in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, particularly those with severe hypoglycemia unawareness and frequent hypoglycemic episodes. In clinical studies, such as the Phase 3 trial at Northwestern University (NCT01897688), the procedure is often accompanied by induction immunosuppression, such as alemtuzumab, to prevent T-cell mediated rejection of the transplanted islets.
