This investigational cell therapy consists of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (allo-MSCs) being evaluated for the treatment of anthracycline-induced cardiomyopathy (AIC) in cancer survivors. Developed by The University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston, and studied in the Phase I SENECA trial, the therapy involves the transendocardial injection of 100 million cells. The biological mechanism is primarily paracrine, involving the secretion of factors that modulate fibrosis, apoptosis, and inflammation within the myocardium. Additionally, the cells are believed to transfer mitochondria-rich extracellular vesicles to damaged cardiomyocytes to restore metabolic function and promote tissue repair.
