This cell therapy consists of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) being investigated by AHEPA University Hospital for the treatment of end-stage heart failure. The therapeutic approach involves the intramyocardial implantation of these multipotent stromal cells during the surgical placement of a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy. Mesenchymal stem cells are characterized by their ability to migrate to sites of injury and exert potent immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and pro-angiogenic effects. In the context of myocardial ischemia, these cells are thought to function primarily through paracrine signaling, secreting a variety of cytokines and growth factors that promote tissue repair, reduce fibrosis, and potentially stimulate endogenous regenerative processes within the failing heart muscle.
