This investigational cell-based therapy, developed by the University of Illinois at Chicago, consists of allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the treatment of neurotrophic keratitis and non-healing corneal epithelial defects. Administered via subconjunctival injection, the therapy aims to facilitate corneal repair by utilizing the regenerative, trophic, and immunomodulatory properties of MSCs. The cells are produced under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions at the University of Illinois Hospital Clinical Stem Cell Laboratory. A Phase 1 dose-escalation study (NCT04626583) is currently evaluating the safety and maximal tolerated dose of this biologic modality in patients with persistent corneal wounds, supported by the Department of Defense Vision Research Program.
