Allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy being developed by LifeStem for the treatment of Type III Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). These cells are typically derived from healthy donor sources, such as umbilical cord tissue or bone marrow, and are administered to patients to leverage their neuroprotective and immunomodulatory properties. In the context of SMA, the therapy is designed to support the survival of motor neurons by secreting a variety of neurotrophic factors, including brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF). These factors help maintain neuronal plasticity and reduce the rate of degeneration. Additionally, the cells modulate the inflammatory microenvironment within the spinal cord, potentially slowing disease progression and improving motor function in patients with Type III SMA.
