Allogeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (ASCs) are an investigational cell therapy being developed for the treatment of systemic sclerosis (Scleroderma). These cells are harvested from the adipose tissue of healthy donors, expanded in vitro, and administered to patients to leverage their potent immunomodulatory and anti-fibrotic properties. Mesenchymal stromal cells are known to secrete a variety of paracrine factors that modulate the immune response, inhibit T-cell proliferation, and reduce the activation of myofibroblasts, which are responsible for the excessive collagen production and fibrosis characteristic of systemic sclerosis. The Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) has been a primary developer and sponsor of clinical trials, such as the SCLERADIP and ALLO-ASC studies, evaluating the safety and efficacy of these cells in treating digital ulcers and skin fibrosis in patients with systemic sclerosis.
