Allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy being developed by the VA Office of Research and Development for the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). The therapy involves the intravenous infusion of donor-derived MSCs, which are hypothesized to modulate the immune response by inducing regulatory T cells (Tregs) and reducing chronic inflammation within the aortic wall. By shifting the inflammatory environment, the treatment aims to slow the progression and enlargement of small aneurysms, potentially reducing the risk of rupture and the need for surgical intervention. This approach is currently being evaluated in the Phase 1 VIVAAA/ARREST clinical trial.
