Overview

Allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells from Wharton’s jelly (WJ-MSCs) are a population of multipotent stromal cells isolated from the gelatinous connective tissue (Wharton’s jelly) of the human umbilical cord. These cells are characterized by high proliferative capacity, immunomodulatory properties, and low immunogenicity. WJ-MSCs can differentiate into multiple cell types (adipogenic, osteogenic, chondrogenic), secrete anti-inflammatory cytokines, and release bioactive molecules (including exosomes) that stimulate tissue repair and modulate immune responses. They exert their effects primarily through paracrine mechanisms, modulating both innate and adaptive immune systems. WJ-MSCs have been investigated and used experimentally in a wide range of conditions including acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), metabolic syndrome, ischemic cardiomyopathy, myocardial infarction, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, erectile dysfunction, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and chronic wounds. They are commonly administered via intravenous, intra-articular, or intrathecal infusion and demonstrate potent safety and efficacy in early clinical and preclinical studies[1][2][3].
