Overview

This is an investigational cell therapy developed by the Sklifosovsky Institute of Emergency Care for the treatment of acute severe contusion spinal cord injury (SCI). The therapy involves multiple systemic (intravenous) infusions of allogeneic, unrelated, group- and rhesus-matched human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells (HUCBCs). The treatment is typically administered within the first few days following the injury. The mechanism of action is thought to involve the release of neurotrophic factors, immunomodulation to reduce secondary injury, and potential stimulation of endogenous repair mechanisms. Clinical evaluation in Phase 1/2 trials (such as the SUBSCI study) has focused on safety and the restoration of motor and sensory functions in patients with severe neurological deficits (ASIA A/B).
