Overview

This experimental cell therapy consists of allogeneic Natural Killer (NK) cells expanded ex vivo and administered to patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. Developed by Xinxiang Medical University, the therapy aims to supplement the patient's innate immune system, which is often compromised or exhausted during severe SARS-CoV-2 infection. NK cells are innate lymphoid cells that function by identifying and destroying virally infected cells through the release of cytotoxic granules containing perforin and granzymes, and by producing cytokines that help coordinate the broader immune response. The treatment is administered via intravenous infusion as an adjunctive therapy to standard care, specifically targeting patients with acute pneumonia and respiratory distress to improve viral clearance and clinical recovery.
