Overview

Allogeneic pancreatic islet cells are a biologic cell therapy consisting of purified clusters of endocrine cells (islets of Langerhans) derived from a donor pancreas. In the context of the ITA-OMEN trial led by Lorenzo Piemonti at Ospedale San Raffaele, these cells are being investigated for transplantation into the omentum as an alternative to the standard intrahepatic portal vein delivery. The primary goal is to restore endogenous insulin production and glycemic control in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus who experience severe hypoglycemic unawareness or metabolic instability. The procedure requires a concomitant immunosuppressive regimen to prevent graft rejection.
