Overview

Allogeneic pancreatic islets are a biologic cell therapy consisting of a purified suspension of endocrine clusters, primarily insulin-producing beta cells, isolated from the pancreata of deceased donors. This specific therapy was evaluated by University Hospital, Grenoble, in the Phase 3 TRIMECO trial for the treatment of unstable type 1 diabetes mellitus and type 1 diabetes following kidney transplantation. The islets are infused into the recipient's portal vein, where they engraft within the liver parenchyma and function as a bio-artificial organ, secreting insulin in response to physiological glucose fluctuations. This approach aims to restore glycemic stability, prevent severe hypoglycemia, and potentially achieve insulin independence by replacing the lost endocrine function of the native pancreas.
