Overview

Allogeneic peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPC) are hematopoietic stem cells collected from the peripheral blood of a histocompatible donor, typically a sibling, following mobilization with growth factors such as filgrastim. In the context of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center clinical trial (NCT00014534), these cells are used as a therapeutic transplant following a high-dose conditioning regimen consisting of busulfan and cyclophosphamide. The primary objective of this cell therapy is to reconstitute the recipient's hematopoietic and immune systems after myeloablative chemotherapy has eliminated diseased bone marrow. Additionally, the donor-derived immune cells can provide a graft-versus-tumor (GVT) effect, where they recognize and eliminate residual malignant cells in patients with hematologic malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and myelodysplastic syndrome.
