Allogeneic red blood cells are human erythrocytes collected from a donor and transfused into a different individual. They are used to treat anemia, acute or chronic blood loss, and other conditions requiring restoration of oxygen-carrying capacity. The mechanism of action is the direct replacement of lost or deficient endogenous erythrocytes, thereby increasing hemoglobin concentration and improving tissue oxygenation. Allogeneic RBCs can be processed into various forms such as suspended (packed) RBCs, leukocyte-reduced RBCs, washed RBCs, or irradiated RBCs to reduce adverse reactions. They are stored refrigerated for up to 42 days with additive solutions (AS-1/AS-3/AS-5), or cryopreserved for longer periods[6][8][10]. Indications include trauma-related hemorrhage, surgery-associated bleeding, severe anemia due to chronic disease or chemotherapy, and certain hematological disorders.
