Allogeneic SARS-CoV-2 virus-specific T-cells (VSTs) are an adoptive cellular therapy developed by the University of Edinburgh for the treatment of COVID-19. This therapy is manufactured using a single-stage process from the blood of individuals who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection. The process selects and expands T-cells that are specifically reactive to viral antigens, such as the spike, nucleocapsid, and membrane proteins. When administered to patients with active COVID-19, these donor-derived T-cells are intended to recognize and eliminate virus-infected cells, thereby augmenting the recipient's immune response and potentially reducing disease severity. The therapy has been evaluated in the DEFINE platform trial (Phase Ib/IIa), which investigates various experimental treatments for hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
