Overview

Allogeneic thymus tissue chips are a regenerative medicine product consisting of processed thymus tissue from a donor, typically obtained during pediatric cardiac surgery. Developed by the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, this therapy is designed to treat congenital athymia, a life-threatening condition often associated with complete DiGeorge syndrome where the absence of a thymus prevents T-cell maturation. The chips or slices of thymus tissue are implanted into the recipient's muscle (usually the quadriceps), where they provide the necessary stromal microenvironment for the patient's hematopoietic stem cell-derived progenitors to undergo thymopoiesis. This process restores a functional T-cell repertoire, enabling the patient to develop adaptive immunity and fight infections.
