Overview

Allogeneic umbilical cord blood cells refer to an investigational cellular therapy consisting of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells, along with immune cells like T cells and natural killer (NK) cells, harvested from donor umbilical cord blood. In the context of clinical trials led by HOVON, this therapy is utilized in double umbilical cord blood transplantation (dUCBT), where two unrelated cord blood units are infused into patients with high-risk hematological malignancies who lack matched donors. The therapeutic effect is twofold: the transplanted stem cells reconstitute the patient's bone marrow, while the donor immune cells mediate a graft-versus-leukemia (GvL) effect to eliminate residual malignant cells.
